Seven to Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan

Members of Afghan Parliament, regional government and civil society will portray seven women’s rights activists in documentary play Seven. The play will be featured in Dari in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh, Afghanistan’s northern province. The event takes place at the end of May (exact date will be disclosed closer to the day).

Seven has gained support from Balkh governor Atta Mohammed Noor, Dr. Sima Samar, head of Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission and 2012 recipient of Right Livelihood Award (The Alternative Nobel Prize) as well as from Dr Mohammad Afzal Adeed, head of Elected Provinical Council of Balkh province. The ensemble features several members of parliament, a district governor, and other prominent figures of government and civil society, male and female. The names will be disclosed closer to the event.

Seven in Mazar is presented by Swedish Institute in cooperation with the Swedish Transition Support Team of Mazar-e Sharif. The event was initated by ambassador Henrik Landerholm, who read the role of Afghan women’s rights activist Ms. Azizi, in a 2011 Seven-event in Almedalen, Visby, Sweden.

Based on interviews conducted in 2007, Seven was created by seven award-winning playwrights: Paula Cizmar, Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K. Mack, Ruth Margraff, Anna Deveare Smith and Susan Yankowitz in collaboration with Vital Voices Global Partnership.

Seven “an example of successful cultural diplomacy in Serbia”

“Friday 19 April Sweden’s Ambassador to Serbia, Christer Asp gave a lecture on “Cultural Diplomacy” for international students at the Embassy in Belgrade. Mr. Asp talked to the enthusiastic students about the importance of modern diplomacy to build closer relations between Sweden and Serbia. An example of successful cultural diplomacy in Serbia, was the performance of “Seven”, a play with strong connection to human rights. The readings in Belgrade and Kragujevac 2011/2012 succeeded in gathering high profile politicians to bring focus to issues of women’s rights and domestic violence.”

Sad news: human rights activitist and trade unionist Inez McCormack dies after short illness

On Monday January 22, outstanding activist and human being Inez McCormack passed away after a short period of illness. I was fortunate enugh to meet her many times after commencing my work with SEVEN, and experienced her amazing ability to inspire to intelligent action. One of her many remarkable gifts was to pose the right question – the question that unlocked possibilites, created dialouge and energy.

To date many hundred persons in Sweden and many other countries, have read her role in Seven, and it is an inspiering thought that her voice will continue to be heard. In her characteristic wry way she said when I visited her sick bed in November: “I am creating an agenda of effective annoyance to be implemented when I am gone” – always pointing a finger at power.

She will be very greatly missed.

SEVEN to Amman, Jordan

On October 20 SEVEN will have its Arab region premiere in Amman, Jordan.

Seven is presented in Arabic on October 20 and in English on October 21.

All Hussein Theatre Centre is the venue, and the ensemble will consist of notables from the region.

The presentation is acollaboration between The Swedish Institute, The Swedish Embassy in Amman, the Al Balad Theatre and Aat Theatre Festival.

Co-director is Lana Nasser, actor and playwright, the 2011 recepient of the Ethel Adnan Award for theatre.
